Bible in schools

Here is a great opportunity to be involved in the community and it fits well
with our church vision.

We currently give financial support to the Religious Education programme
at Westburn School and it would be great to have a person involved too.

It's a half hour programme, at 9a.m. on Fridays at Westburn (also,
Thursdays at Avonhead). There are really good recourses - the curriculum
is well thought out with detailed lesson plans.

I've found doing this really rewarding and if you would like to know more,
do come and talk to me. If you don't feel comfortable with the idea of
teaching, there is always a need for helpers in the classroom.

Now is a good time to be planning for next year! (R E starts up in March)

Angel Tree

We have received our "Angels" for this year from Prison Fellowship.  Choose an "Angel", buy a present to the value of $25.00, please do not wrap but return to Paula by the 22nd November.

On each "Angel" is the child's name, gender and their Christmas present wish.

If you would like to be part of this project but don't want to do the shopping just pass the money onto Paula and the shopping will be done on your behalf.  Donations are very welcome for the wrapping paper, cellotape etc.

Also with each "Angel" there is a bookmark for you to write your "Angels" name on it and pray for that child during the Christmas season, and even through the following year.

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Sunday 8 November is IDOP

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

It is a time set apart in over 130 countries, for us to remember thousands of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world who suffer persecution, simply because they confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

· Through prayer, people are released from prison.
· Through prayer, torture comes to an end.
· Through prayer, families find safety.
· Through prayer, false charges are dropped.
· Through prayer, people can be sustained and preserved through all manner of evil.
· Through prayer, world leaders can have a change of heart.
· And through prayer, those who oppress others can find the love of Jesus.
A few minutes in prayer for a persecuted Christian can make a real difference to their situation.

Way of the Light

On Easter Sunday we made use of the Halswell Cross as we walked the Via Lucis (Way of Light).

The walkers paused at 14 'stations' for Bible reading, reflection and prayer. These are the Stations of the Resurrection which we adapted for our service (adapted script).

Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again.

01 April 2009

I've been enjoying a very timely podcast of a lecture by Tom Wright entitled "Can a Scientist Believe in the Resurrection" given to the Faraday Institute just over a year ago.

It is well crafted and very, very helpful ..... especially as we approach Easter. I highly recommend it.

You can find it here
... including transcripts and, if you have broadband or are very patient, audio and video files.

There are a swag of other lectures related to Christian Faith and Science at
http://www.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk/faraday/Multimedia.php that I just found and intend exploring.

Life FM

Sadly, the bid for the frequency in Chrishchurch failed.

25 March 2009

Help get Life FM in Christchurch !

Life FM is a youth orientated Christian radio show run by the Rhema Broadcasting Group. Initially it started here in Christchurch when Radio Rhema was based here too but they lost the frequency as it was only temporary and they didn't have the money to keep buy a proper frequency.

Life FM has expanded to many cities across New Zealand but hasn't managed to get back into Christchurch. Next week is Life FM's chance to get into Christchurch by buying a frequency that the crown is selling in an auction next Tuesday the 31st of March.

Life FM needs our help by donating money to help them bid in the auction. I think this is a very worth while thing to put money towards as I believe the youth of Christchurch need a clean radio station compared to some of the stuff that is available at the moment.

Check out the Life FM website to read more and donate money.

Book Review: Surprised by Hope « Tom Wright

I reckon this is a timely book for us. Especially relevant around Easter time and to inform our mission of hope, love and faith as we get 'alongside' others in this broken world.
